Malcolm is a visiting chair of the School of Health and Social Care, College of Social Science, University of Lincoln. Formerly the head of school, he is a registered social worker with a particular interest in all aspects of mental health in general and compulsory admission decisions in particular.

A former Mental Health Act Commissioner, he is the author of Social Work and Mental Health, now in its 5th edition and published by SAGE. He is currently a co-editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice, and of Psychotherapeutic approaches in Health, Welfare and Community, published quarterly by Taylor and Francis.
