Michael Preston-Shoot is professor emeritus of social work at the University of Bedfordshire. He is independent chair of Brent Safeguarding Adults Board and Lewisham Safeguarding Adults Board.
He is the author of serious case reviews and safeguarding adult reviews, and regularly provides training and consultancy for health and social care practitioners and managers on legal literacy, adult safeguarding and self-neglect.
His recent research, teaching and publications have concentrated on law and social work practice, decision making, safeguarding adult reviews, and work with adults who self-neglect.

balancing respect for autonomy with duty of care, and provides examples of interventions.
